Past UK Fossil Live/Open to all Events at Kinghorn
11th June 2005

Welcome to UK Fossils LIVE. Well Helmsdale is a long way from our base in Suffolk so we are running UK Fossils today from Kirkcaldy (near Edinburgh) and will continue our journey tomorrow.

Our first trip of the week was to look at the volcanic rocks at Kinghorn. These are Carboniferous but volcanic eruptions here preserved life in the rocks. This is a location which is far more interesting for its Geology than its fossils but for any fossil enthusiast, it is most interesting.

The actual rocks here are part of the Dinantian stage of the carboniferous, the sub stages can be broken down into Visean, followed by Brigantian. This group is known as the 'Kinghorn Volcanic Formation'. The rock sequences here are of basalt lava flows with pyroclastic rocks and interbedded with minor sedimentary rocks. Fossils that can be found are mainly corals and shells.

To get to this location, drive down through Kinghorn, all the way down to the car park along the seafront, a small cliff can be see at the opposite end of the small sandy bay.
